Educational Partnership Programs
School Social Inclusion Project
The ICC Social Inclusion Project was developed for children with disabilities who have a difficult time making friendships and developing reciprocal relationships with their peer group. The purpose of the social inclusion project is to help the child connect with peers in their school and community.
When a child with special needs is referred to the ICC social inclusion project, a meeting date is set for the parents and/or school staff and an ICC facilitator to identify the specific needs of the child. Once the child’s needs are identified, the ICC facilitator will begin to work with the staff and students involved in the child’s life. One of the first steps is to provide sensitivity training to the child’s classmates or a small set of their peers. All children in the class are asked to volunteer to help build connections for the identified child or group of children; those who participate agree to help the child feel more included. Group participants help to identify activities that are of interest to all of the children involved in the group. In the past, activities have included making ice cream sundaes, playing board games, gross motor games, bowling and going out for pizza. The group facilitator maintains close contact with the children and encourages discussion about the good things that are happening, any questions they may have or challenges that might arise. These groups provide an invaluable learning experience for all involved and often become a springboard for future friendships and long lasting relationships.
