On the Horizon: Parent Education and Training program
Parents of children with special needs are often eager to learn about and support their child’s disability. Unfortunately, these families also face busy schedules, unique child care demands, tight family budgets, and a lack of quality programs that prevent them from attending useful seminars. In order to address these needs, ICC will create a Parent Education and Training Program, including a comprehensive on-line distance-learning program that won’t conflict with work or therapy schedules, impact already tight family budgets, or create child care challenges. The program will also help parents connect with one another about their unique challenges through online message boards. This will allow those struggling with the stresses of parenting a child with special needs to network and speak to one another freely and, if desired, anonymously.
Our goals through the distance-learning program are threefold
- To help all parents gain a better understanding of how children develop and strategies they can use to be more effective, active participants on a child’s therapy or special education team.
- To give parents with limited or no access to services – due to waiting lists, lack of providers, or lack of funding -- effective tools that will facilitate a child’s development at home.
- To give parents the opportunity to share ideas, issues and concerns with other parents who are in similar situations
